Stags super six pull off away win
Stags faced an away trip to Lewisham college against a fired up London Heat side looking to avenge their loss earlier in the season. The Stags started the game with only 5 players due to drop outs, with 1 super sub answering the call and turning up just before half time. The Heat went out at a fast pace to try and get ahead and run the stags off the court, but some solid offense kept the Stags within 4 points at half time.

In the second half stags moved the ball around well and the scores were almost level heading to the 4th quarter, where the Stags managed to hold the Heat to a mere 4 points with some stiffling defense and pull away for an improbable victory.

Final Score: London Heat 50 City Stags 60

Stags fall to 3-2
Stags fell short in a tough encounter with league leaders Newham Youngbloods on Tuesday, going up early with some tough defense, the fitness of Newham soon showed in the 3rd and 4th quarters a they pulled away with a relentless fast-break game to finish worthy winners.

Final Score: City Stags 77 Newham Youngbloods 97

Stags win third game at home
Stags came up against a young team with some familiar faces from previous encounters in the met league. Using a stiffling zone defense Pioneers were held to rushed outside shooting as Stags went up 9-2. What followed was a tough full court man to man press by the Pioneers which Stags struggled to master. Keeping the game close until near the end of the final quarter the Pioneers were finally undone by an 8-0 Stags run and couldnt quite get back in touch, with Ben 'clutch' Spashett sealing the win with a trademark jumper with 7 seconds remaining.

Final Score: City Stags 67 London Pioneers 64

Stags continue winning ways
Stags continued their winning ways with a victory over league newcomers London Heat. Starting off strong again and going 9-1 up, the Heat matched the Stags all through and the game was close until the 3rd quarter, when Stags tough man defense and agressive driving opened up a double digit lead, to allow them to cruise through the 4th quarter to victory.

Final Score: City Stags 66 London Heat 51

Stags start new season with comeback win
Stags started the new season with a thrilling comeback victory over Jumpoff Bulldogs. After starting well and leading after the 1st, it was a close game up until the end of the 3rd quarter, wehn the Bulldogs started to pull away. With 2mins 40 left to go in the 4th it looked like game over, but a smothering press and some quick 3 point plays in the last few possesions saw Stags roar back, tying the game with seconds remaining to send it in to overtime.

Despite a late 3 from half court making Stags sweat, they held on for the win 81-80 to start the season off with a bang!

Home games finished for 09-10 season
All Stags home games for the Met league have finished for 09-10 season, so training will now be 8-10pm every Tuesday throughout the summer at Britannia Leisure Centre. All new players and guests welcome to come along and attend for £5 each. See you at training.

Caister Festival of Baketball
City Stags will be taking a team as usual to the Caister Festival of Basketball on 7-9 May. If you are interested in coming with us to test your skills and experience the many delights of the weekend tournament, contact Leon Parks.

The first training session in the new year will be on the 12th January, due to the match on the 5th. As usual 8-10pm at Britannia Leisure centre.

Stags lose to league leaders
City Stags fought hard on their return to action in 2010, finally going down 65-84 to league leaders Middlesex University. The game turned in the 3rd quarter after Stags had led after the 1st and much of the 2nd quarter, with Middlesex restricting the Stags to a mere 6 points.

Injury update
Starting G Sam Jones was upended by a cynical hard foul against Enfield Heat and had to be taken to hospital, where a broken wrist was diagnosed. All the best for a speedy recovery in 2010 from all of the Stags.

Britannia Leisure centre have messed up our booking so unfortunately there is no training tonight as scheduled.

Stags move to Div 2
A vote was taken to get the players view on Stags division status, as the committee felt a move down to div 2, while not neccessary, would be helpful for the development of the club and new players. The players voted to accept this motion, and the Stags will be looking to hit the new season running and look to work their way back up to Div 1.

 

About us

City Stags are a social yet competitive team based near Old Street, London. Currently celebrating our 10 year anniversary of competitive league basketball in London, the team is very active not only in local league but also summer and winter tournaments. Founded in 1997-98 for a friendly tournament in Bournemouth, this tradition is still going to this day, just one of the many highlights available to members during the year.

The team trains and plays matches on Tuesday nights, if you are interested in coming along to take part in one of our sessions please use the map and contacts links opposite and get in touch. New players are always welcome. We have players based all over the Greater London region.
